The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) is the process by which adults prepare to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Whether you are unbaptized, baptized in another Christian tradition, or a baptized Catholic seeking to complete your sacraments, OCIA is a journey of faith, learning, and conversion. Through a series of sessions, participants explore the teachings of the Catholic Church, grow in their relationship with God, and discern their call to the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. The process typically follows several stages, culminating in the reception of the sacraments at the Easter Vigil. If you are interested in becoming Catholic or completing your sacraments, we invite you to join us on this journey of faith. To learn more or to register, please contact Lucas Lahlum at [email protected] or 651-415-3343. Please feel free to keep reading below for more information on OCIA.
Who is OCIA For?
The Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) is open to anyone who is interested in exploring the Catholic faith, whether they are new to Christianity or have been on a faith journey for years. This process is designed for:
Unbaptized Adults – Those who have never been baptized and wish to enter the Catholic Church.
Christians Baptized in Another Tradition – Those who were baptized in a different Christian denomination and now seek full communion with the Catholic Church through Confirmation and the Eucharist.
Baptized Catholics Who Have Not Completed Their Sacraments – Those who were baptized in the Catholic Church but have not yet received the sacraments of Confirmation and/or the Eucharist.
Anyone Wanting to Learn More About the Catholic Faith – Even if you are not sure about becoming Catholic, you are welcome to attend OCIA sessions to explore Catholic beliefs and practices.
No matter where you are in your faith journey, OCIA provides a welcoming environment to learn, ask questions, and discern God’s call in your life.
What to Expect:
OCIA is more than just a class—it’s a journey of faith formation, personal discovery, and spiritual growth. Here’s what you can expect: 1. 12 Sessions: Participants meet regularly to explore topics such as Scripture, Catholic beliefs, prayer, and the sacraments. Sessions include discussions, teachings, and opportunities to ask questions in a friendly and supportive environment. Additionally, each participant will be expected to have an introductory meeting with Lucas Lahlum. There will be occasional homework, such as watching videos, or reading. 2. Liturgical Rites: Throughout the process, there are special ceremonies at Mass that mark important steps in the journey. These include:
Rite of Acceptance/Rite of Welcome – The first formal step in committing to the OCIA journey. (usually in November)
Rite of Election – A special moment during Lent where those preparing for baptism are recognized by the bishop.
Sacraments of Initiation – At the Easter Vigil, those ready to enter the Church receive the sacraments of Baptism (if needed), Confirmation, and Eucharist.
3. A Supportive Community Faith is meant to be shared, and OCIA provides a welcoming community of fellow seekers, parishioners, and mentors. Each participant has a sponsor—a practicing Catholic who serves as a guide and support throughout the process. (If you do not know someone able to sponsor you through OCIA, we have many members of our Parish who would be thrilled to sponsor you.)
4. A Community of Faith
OCIA is not just about learning—it’s about becoming part of a faith community. Through shared discussions, prayer, and fellowship, participants build relationships with others on the same journey and experience the richness of Catholic life. 5. Discernment and Growth You are never pressured to make a commitment before you are ready. OCIA is a time to ask questions, seek understanding, and listen to God’s call in your life. Whether you decide to become Catholic or not, we are here to support you in your journey.
Official Stages of OCIA
The OCIA process unfolds in several stages, allowing participants to grow in faith and understanding before receiving the sacraments. 1. Inquiry (Pre-Catechumenate) This is the first step for those who are curious about the Catholic faith. It is a time for asking questions, learning about basic beliefs, and discerning whether you want to continue. There is no commitment at this stage—just an open invitation to explore. 2. Catechumenate If you decide to move forward, this phase provides a deeper formation in Catholic teachings, prayer, and Scripture. Those preparing for Baptism are now called catechumens, while those already baptized are known as candidates. This stage involves regular sessions, prayer, and participation in the liturgy. It also includes the combined Rite of Welcome and Acceptance. 3. Purification & Enlightenment (Lenten Preparation) During Lent, those preparing for the sacraments enter a period of spiritual preparation and deepened prayer. Catechumens participate in the Rite of Election, where they are formally called to receive Baptism at Easter. Candidates preparing for Confirmation and the Eucharist also take part in special rites. 4. Sacraments of Initiation (Easter Vigil) The journey reaches its high point at the Easter Vigil, where those who have been preparing receive the Sacraments of Initiation:
Baptism (for those who have not yet been baptized)
Confirmation (receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit)
Eucharist (receiving the Body and Blood of Christ)
For candidates already baptized, this is the moment they are fully received into the Catholic Church and receive Confirmation and the Eucharist. 5. Mystagogy (Living the Catholic Faith) Following Easter, participants enter a final period called mystagogy, which helps them grow as new members of the Catholic Church. This phase focuses on deepening one’s faith, understanding the sacraments, and becoming actively involved in the Church community.
When & Where Do We Meet?
Our OCIA sessions take place across 12 Wednesday evenings loosely following the school year. We meet as a group in the St. Monica room which is located in the school. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 1. Do I have to commit to becoming Catholic right away? No, OCIA is a process of exploration and discernment. The early stages are designed to help you learn about the faith without pressure. You can take your time and decide when—or if—you are ready to take the next steps. 2. I was baptized in another Christian denomination. Do I need to be baptized again? No. The Catholic Church recognizes one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. If you were baptized with water and in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, you will not need to be baptized again. Instead, you will prepare to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist. 3. What if I was baptized Catholic but never received First Communion or Confirmation? If you were baptized in the Catholic Church but did not receive all of your sacraments, OCIA will help prepare you for Confirmation and the Eucharist. The process may be adapted based on your specific situation. 4. Can I just attend sessions to learn more without committing to becoming Catholic? Yes! OCIA is open to anyone who wants to explore the Catholic faith, whether you are considering becoming Catholic or simply want to learn more. You are welcome to participate at your own pace. 5. What is a sponsor, and do I need one? A sponsor is a practicing Catholic who serves as a guide and mentor throughout your OCIA journey. They will support you in prayer, answer questions, and walk with you as you grow in faith. If you do not have a sponsor, we can help match you with someone from the parish. 6. What if I’m not sure I’m ready to take this step? That’s okay! OCIA is a journey, not a one-time decision. You are welcome to come, ask questions, and take your time in discerning whether God is calling you to the Catholic Church.
